Description:
Peel away the patina of time when visiting landmark sites in ruggedly beautiful South African landscapes. Follow the footsteps of the earliest of humans while travelling in the company of informative experts.
In the Cape trace the artistic legacy of the San / Bushmen, an ancient hunter-gatherer people in their evocative rock art paintings. Walk around pristine sites, some dating back 10,000 years, and find out how they survived for thousands of years until the arrival of the colonisers.
In the Winelands uncover the impact of colonisation and its legacies. Explore 8,000 years of history and archaeology in a window-in-time museum housed in a 1740 wine cellar. Wander around the country’s premier wine estate and in contemporary gardens landscaped on the Dutch East India Company’s original template for its ”Halfway House”.
On the way to Bushmans Kloof, a refuge renowned for its unparalleled rock art displays, gain insight into the San / Bushmen heritage and folklore from cultural interpreters who share their tracking skills, hunting methods and botanical know how; see where ‘Eve’ left her footprints in the sand some 117, 000 year ago; visit a site that contains the greatest diversity of five-million year old fossils in the world; and hear about shore line excavations that have revealed significant artefacts left by Middle and Late Stone Age inhabitants.
In Johannesburg examine recent archaeological fossil finds that unlock our understanding of the genus Homo and his transition from pre-human to human made by headline-capturing palaeo-anthropologists. Visit a scene-setting museum that unravels where and when things began and tracks man’s origins and journey out of Africa.
In the Cradle of Humankind explore an active dig in this World Heritage site that has enabled man to decode the span of evolution that stretches back some 3.5 million years. Contemplate the evidence that mankind’s African ancestors were using skills more advanced than mere stone tool-making some forty thousand years before Homo sapiens in Europe started decorating cave walls in France and Spain. Celebrate your last night under African skies reflecting on the words of Pliny ‘’Out of Africa ~ Always Something New’’.
Opt to visit Pinnacle Point caves near Mossel Bay that reveal the earliest evidence for modern human behaviour, guided by the archaeologist who discovered them.
Or else a safari in Bostwana, for insights into the fast vanishing way of life of the Kalahari Bushmen, engaging with trackers as they offer a window into the past while sharing their ancient knowledge and survival skills.
Itinerary:
DAY 1 – CAPE TOWN
On arrival at Cape Town airport you’ll be met and transferred to the Winchester Mansions, overlooking the Atlantic ocean and Robben Island, with a tranquil inner courtyard and easy access to the vibrant Waterfront, where you can relax and unwind before gathering for a welcome drink followed by celebratory dinner with select guests.
DAY 2 – CAPE PENINSULA
Get your bearings by summiting Table Mountain by way of cable car, for an eagle’s eye view of the city and the Waterfront. Then travel south on Chapman’s Peak to Cape Point, driving along the Atlantic coastline’s ruggedly spectacular spine, to stand at the tip of the African continent and legendary meeting point of two oceans.
Celebrated for its astounding array of indigenous flora, wildlife and fascinating marine diversity, the National Park offers a rich cultural heritage stretching over millennia, with relics of significant prehistory.
Enjoy a lunch-with-a-view before returning via the naval bastion of Simon’s Town and picturesque fishing harbour of Kalk Bay.
The evening is open, with several fine dining choices near by.
DAY 3 – THE WINELANDS
The Winelands are a mere 50-minutes drive away. At the country’s premier wine estate stroll around spacious grounds and gracious manor house. Meander through Stellenbosch, a tree-lined university town and heart of the Winelands.
On another estate, track 8,000 years of colonialism, slavery and apartheid to the dawn of democracy – and try out traditional Cape dishes and some award-winning wines.
Wander around lush gardens based on a design by the Dutch East India Company in 1652 for their gardens that replenished passing ships with fresh food.
In the evening, enjoy a pan African dinner.
DAY 4 – LANGEBAAN
Leave Cape Town, heading for a unique destination which introduces you to the descendants of the first indigenous people of southern Africa. Hear from San/Bushmen about their traditional skills, languages, customs and how they survived until the arrival of the colonisers.
Follow the magnificent Langebaan lagoon shoreline to where “Eve’s” footprints were left some 117,000 years ago.
Spend the night at The Farmhouse, a homestead overlooking the lagoon, a Ramsar site famous for its wetland birds, dining on traditional West Coast fare.
DAY 5 – COAST TO THE CEDERBERG
Continue north, going back 5 million years to a site when the greatest diversity of fossils were left in one place, before passing landmark excavation sites that have revealed significant artefacts. Then snake through the craggy Cederberg mountains, to reach a luxury wilderness reserve in time for tea and a game drive.
Bushmans Kloof is a treasure trove of more than 130 San/Bushmen rock art sites, a wildlife & environment award-winner and stylish refuge to boot.
DAY 6 – THE CEDERBERG
The day is yours, with morning guided rock art excursions and afternoon game drives, interspersed with a choice of outdoor activities to refresh the senses or simply to relax and savour the tranquillity. Local ingredients such as rooibos are showcased and gourmet dinners paired with wines from their acclaimed cellar.
DAY 7 – JOHANNESBURG
After a morning excursion and reviving brunch, transfer to Cape Town airport for a 2-hour flight flight to “Joburg, the commercial capital, a city of contrasts and contradictions … whose mineral-rich underground deposits fuelled its 1880’s boom and bloom” – Wallpaper.
Welcoming staff at The Winston are on hand to whip up a delicious meal if you choose or you could eat out independently.

DAY 8 – THE CRADLE OF HUMANKIND
Begin your journey of discovery at the Origins Centre that uncovers where and when things began.
Then meet the hottest of palaeo-ontological properties whose recent finds help unlock our understanding of the genus Homo, and see the crown jewels of the palaeo world, the Taung and Sediba skulls.
In The Cradle of Humankind, a World Heritage Site of almost 200 square miles of rural landscape, interact with archaeologists during a guided visit around Drimolen, a fossil site discovered only in 1992 and already the third richest hominid site in southern Africa, and picnic under trees.
Celebrate your last night under African skies where 3.5 million years of human activity have taken place. Over a festive farewell you’ll be able to weave together strands in time while pondering the saying attributed to Pliny some 1,800 years ago: Out of Africa ~ Always Something New.
DAY 9 – JOHANNESBURG
Following a leisurely breakfast and subject to your schedule, you’ll be transferred to the airport for your home bound journey
