Day 1 - Moshi - KILIMANJARO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TO ARUSHA

Arriving at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by one of our experienced driver guides, ready to greet and escort you to Arusha and your chosen hotel. He will introduce you to this wonderful city and country.

After your long flight, you will be pleased to discover that Arusha – the undisputed ‘safari capital’ of East Africa-is perched at 1400 meters above sea level, keeping the temperatures and humidity relatively low. All around this important city are some of Tanzania’s greatest delights. Mount Meru towers above Arusha, while even distant Kilimanjaro can be seen on a clear day. Arusha provides the ideal starting-point for safari-lovers, within reach of Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. The city even has its own natural attraction, Arusha National Park, close by. Named after the Wa-arusha residents of the town, this busy agricultural, administrative and tourist centre is the perfect place to relax after a long journey and before you set off on safari, the holiday of a lifetime. Welcome to Arusha and welcome to Tanzania!

Day 2 - ARUSHA TO NDUTU
oday, your adventure begins after breakfast at your hotel. We’re driving north and west, introducing you to the wonders of the Tanzanian landscapes as we head for Ndutu in the south-eastern part of the Serengeti. Our drive today is around 280km, five hours of changing scenery before we arrive at our destination. Although Nature and its rainfall determine exactly where the migrating animals will be in winter, Ndutu is a reliable base at this time of the year, allowing us to maximize our opportunities for tracking the animals.

During the journey to Ndutu, you will begin to appreciate the sheer scale of Tanzania’s territory. The raw beauty of the landscapes will reveal itself. Your driver-guide will help you to spot any animals and birds on the way and answer any questions about what you see. Serengeti is of course a UNESCO World Heritage Site, an incredible mix of grasslands, savannah, woods and mountain scenery, a haven for the wildlife which congregates in this fantastic natural setting. On arrival, we make the most of our time with an afternoon game drive in the Ndutu area. After today’s journey and game-drive, your driver will take you safely to your accommodation for your overnight stay.

Having had a taster the previous afternoon, today you have the whole day ahead of you in the Ndutu area, spotting all varieties of wildlife ‘on the move’ with your expert driver-guide. Each day is different here, but we focus of course on the Great Migration, that unique natural wonder which involves a cast of breathtaking numbers, literally hundreds of thousands of animals as they make their annual journey across the plains.

Zebra and wildebeest are the most numerous of the migrating animals here, grazing on the short-grass plains of the Southern Serengeti and the northern part of the Ngorongoro Conservation area. But your driver-guide will also be on the lookout for other wildlife, too, using his expertise and ‘eagle-eyes’ to try to find elephant, lions, buffalo, leopard and cheetah – just some of the many, many species you will encounter in this stunning place. At the end of the afternoon, it’s back to your accommodation for a cool drink, some relaxation, a delicious dinner and the chance to discuss what you’ve seen during the day’s safari… as well as to check your priceless photos.

But now Serengeti beckons, and so we continue to head north and west into what is surely the world’s greatest park.

At times this unsurpassable place is home to over 1.6 million herbivores and the thousands of predators who stalk them. Their fascinating habits and habitats are sure to provoke questions, so do ask your driver-guide to explain the amazing creatures you see all around you. At night, back at your accommodation, the sights, sounds and smells of Africa will continue to enchant you on this wilderness adventure.

After our picnic lunch, we set off again, searching for wildlife in this awe-inspiring park. Serengeti’s wonders evolve subtly as the day progresses. The myriad animals and birds are the ‘stars of the show’ and Nature’s dramas can unfold at any time. Of course, the animals don’t work to any schedule, so we may find lion or leopard, elephant and zebra, cheetah and antelope at any time on our drives. At the end of the afternoon, we return to the camp for dinner and some much needed rest.

The changing seasons and natu-ral light simply add to the diversity. This morning your driver-guide will help you spot some more of the many species at Serengeti, teaching you about their fascinating habits and habitats. After a pleasant picnic lunch, it’s time to drive eastwards to visit another spectacular setting for Tanzania’s wildlife, the famous Ngorongoro Crater. Today may be ‘departure day’, but there will be plenty of time to enjoy another true spectacle, before your thoughts turn to home. Ngorongoro Crater is often referred to as a wonder of the world and your early morning game drive shows you why.

First, there’s the volcanic caldera (the world’s largest), full of grassland, forest and swamp, a setting of jaw-dropping beauty. Secondly, the permanent water of the crater floor supports a resident population of more than 25,000 large mammals. Here you’ll find many of the reasons you chose to come on safari: elephant, lion, leopard, hyena, jackal, wallowing hippo, waterbuck, baboons… even the rare black rhino finds shelter here. Sharing this awesome space with the animals are the Maasai, grazing their cattle in an area which has been a separate conservation area since 1956 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978. This harmonious co-habitation of man and beast makes Ngorongoro unique in Tanzania and your driver guide will be pleased to explain this incredible co-existence to you. After your early morning game drive, we have our picnic lunch in the crater before we return to the airport for your flight home. The Serengeti Wildebeest Migration Safari is the best holiday for your lifetime.
Video Description:
Wildebeest Migration in Serengeti is one of the Nature’s Biggest Spectacles in Africa
When planning a migration safari to Serengeti, it is highly important to understand the best place to be based at any point of time during Serengeti safari. The Wildebeest and Zebra basically move in a huge anti-clockwise direction. While June is a good time to around the Grumeti River, July/August/September/ sometimes even October is better to be in the Masai Mara.
What is Wildebeest Migration?
Wildebeest migration is a term for circular journey of approx. two million wildlife like wildebeests, zebras, antelopes, topis, who migrate from the Serengeti plains towards Kenya’s Masai Mara and back to the Serengeti, because they are constantly searching for new food and water.
The wildebeest migration is not limited to the confines of the Serengeti National Park and Masai Mara National Park. Instead, the migration actually covers a vast area known as the Serengeti eco-system and Masai Mara as well. This eco-system includes a number of private reserves and concession areas, including The Grumeti Game Reserve, Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the Loliondo Game Controlled Area. These together form a huge area for the migration.
The Annual Migration Pattern in Serengeti
The exact timing of the Serengeti wildebeest migration is completely dependent upon the rainfall patterns each year and its not possible to entirely predict movements. However an oriental wildebeest migration calendar in Serengeti usually follows this monthly path.
December – March
The Southern Plains of the Serengeti are where it all begins. Here is where the wildebeest would like to call home and it’s where, each year in late February or March, life begins for half a million wildebeest.
April – May
As the southern plains dry out and the rut begins, so the wildebeest herds begin to move following rain. In April and May they are possible to be found them flocking slowly through Moru Kopjes in the South Central Serengeti as they begin the journey north.
Jun – July
As the wildebeest migration gathers peak, the herds enter the Serengeti Western Corridor. It’s here that the wildebeest and their newborn calves meet their first serious barrier in the form of the Grumeti River as well as hungry crocodiles waiting for animals to cross the river.
Aug – November
Between August and November, the migration reaches its northern range: the grasslands on either bank of the crocodile-infested Mara River which the herds must cross not once, but twice, as they complete their migration circle. Many animals drawn while crossing the river.
