EXCURSIONS

The island of Ceylon is a small universe it contains as many variations of culture, scenery, and climate as some countries a dozen times its size. What you get from it depends on what you bring; if you never stray from your hotel bar or the dusty streets of westernized Colombo, you could perish of fulminating boredom in a week, and it would serve you right. But if you are interested in people, history, nature, and art - the things that really matter - you may find, as I have, that a lifetime is not enough.Sir Arthur C. Clarke. So, using Colombo as your base, explore the island rich culture and breathtaking landscapes. Use our suggestions as a rough guide to help you choose places you want to visit, how long you plan to stay, and how to get there.

Galle

A picturesque harbour town that serves as the capital of the Southern Province, Galle is a colourful historic area to visit and explore. Although a prominent seaport long before Western influence, its modern historical period began in 1505, when a Portuguese ship took shelter there from a storm and stayed on to take charge of the town. It was then taken control of by the Dutch East India Company in 1640, and then the British in 1796. Since independence, the town’s administration has managed to largely preserve its quaint Dutch colonial architecture and cobbled streets. It currently plays host to a lively art scene, a plethora of great dining options, as well as the annual Galle Literary Festival (will be held on March 13-17 in 2013).

Hikkaduwa

Another southern town, Hikkaduwa was one of the most popular tourist beaches. Unfortunately, it overcrowded which led to the depletion of the rich coral belt surrounding it. It is now fairly crowded with locals on weekend holidays, and is not as much of a key tourist destination anymore, although various water activities such as snorkeling, surfing, scuba diving and glass-bottomed boat rides are still common. Apart from the beach and the coral gardens, the tropical marine life and the Turtle Hatchery are also great places to visit.

Negombo

Traditionally a fishing town, Negombo is well-known for its fresh seafood, and the large number of established beach hotels to choose from in the area. Its proximity to the airport makes it a great stop-over at the beginning or end of a Sri Lanka trip. Apart from the leisure aspect, the town has a fair amount of well-maintained Dutch and Portuguese colonial architecture worth exploring.

Kandy

Kandy is one of the most well-known towns in Sri Lanka and a point of interest for visitors. The city was the last of the royal capitals and is now home to the placid Kandy Lake and the Temple of the Tooth, The Kandy Perahera, one of the biggest elephant pageants in which the sacred tooth relic is paraded around the city, is held here every July/August. Another site of interest is the Old Royal Palace compound, which includes the old royal palace, quarters of royal concubines, the queen’s chambers, the council chambers and the armory

Kitulgala

Slowly growing in fame for its adventure sports, Kitulgala is Sri Lanka’s foremost spot for white water rafting, and also offers jungle trekking, outdoor camping, and mountain biking. For those looking for more serene activity, there are over 54 species of birds in the forested area across the Kelani River. It is also famous for being the location where the legendary David Lean’s classic movie “Bridge on the River Kwai” was filmed. There is a restaurant overlooking the location of the key scene of the movie, and provides a great view for cinema enthusiasts.
